the philippines vs india

In a BBC survey, the Philippines in the only country where the majority respondents have negative views of India. Manish at Sepia Mutiny asks “why does the Philippines hate India?”

A new BBC World poll says that people in the Philippines, South Korea, France, Finland and Brazil think India is a negative influence on the world (via Style Station). Pakistan was not polled. On the other hand, Iran, Afghanistan, Sri Lanka, the UK and Russia rate India highly. Saudi Arabia, Turkey and the African countries polled are most neutral about India, while Sri Lanka and India are most neutral about the U.S.

Though India’s global profile has grown significantly over the last year, it fails to elicit strong feelings… The exceptions are two Muslim countries with positive views: Iran (71% positive) and Afghanistan (59% positive). The only country with widespread negative views is the Philippines (57% negative). Notably, India’s small neighbor Sri Lanka has a mere 4 percent reporting negative views and a robust 49 percent expressing a positive one.

Europeans are divided about India. At the positive end of the spectrum is Great Britain (49% positive, 30% negative) and Russia (47% positive, 10% negative), while at the other end are France and Finland—both being 27 percent positive and 44 percent negative. The US leans slightly positively (39% positive, 35% negative).

it’s not a matter of “hate” or even competition for call center jobs. it just so happens that indians in the philippines are stereotyped as moneylenders, whether or not they are in fact in that business. and so, if a filipino happens to have been or is currently paying off a debt to an indian, s/he might have a negative view of indians in general.

but it would be good to see how the question was phrased. i think very few filipinos if asked whether they “hate” someone would answer “yes.”

  2. Anjamani Says:

It is in the culture of the Filipino’s calling/referring to Indians as “Bumbays”. And when a Filipino hears the word “Bumbay”, what comes to his/her/my mind is

A moneylender in a “5,6″ system (slang “5,6″, means you borrow 5,you return 6, something like that)riding in his bicycle with a huge umbrella and a pack full of “kumots” or garments ready to bargain with his clients.. The system: Indians will lend money in 5,6 system plus they require you should buy some of his garments or else no money will be borrowed.

Maybe, that’s why it is too negative.

Plus the common knowledge that we somethimes compare India with Philippines and convinced that Philippines is better than India (that was decades ago.. The case maybe different after year 2000)
and that mentality stucks in every Filipino mind.

I know an Indian-Pakistani here in our neighborhood. He seems very friendly, no matter what, they’re also human, live ordinarily just like everybody else, maybe differs in race. but then again,we still live at the same planet.

Maybe it’s the lack of cultural awareness about India in the Philippines.

But maybe not for long anymore. Philippines and India has revived its cultural/diplomatic ties as Indian leader visits Manila last month. And a possible opening of a direct flight between India & Philippines via Philippine Airlines, which plans to open Manila-Mumbai flight soon.

WTF, maybe the filipinos they surveyed worked in Saudi Arabia, where Indian Natinals and Filipinos compete for job, why they hate is because Indian National go on for suicide salary, they will take 700 SR compared to the same filipino post receiving 2000. Anyways, just same with filipinos some of assholes and some are good and with other nationals. I have some indian friends and indian enemies.

I’m just wondering on what bracket of society did they conduct the survey. I am no Indians, no Indian influence whatsoever nor Indian friends but I actually admire Indian government. The IT industry is so successful that I think in the next 15 years, it will rule the IT world. Philippines has enormous talents in IT. But it lacks motivation and backing from the government. When it comes to English language, I think Filipinos speak better.

  5. MJ Says:

The Philippine is better than India because more Indians are coming to the
to the Philippines and make living than Filipinos coming to India.

  6. Juror Says:

I think Philippines & India are the same. What matter most is that
when Indian & Filipinos met, they make friendship. It’s a good
example to humanity. We are the world, we are the children, we are
the one who makes our brighter day, so let’s build friendship.
Indians are frinedly as Filipinos too. I have seen lot of Indians
doing business here in Davao CIty, Phil. and I’m amazed of them because
their friendly, business minded and law abiding citizen.
