The British journalists are correct in boycotting Yahoo. Yahoo deserves a boycott for other reasons as well. Yahoo has deleted from Yahoo e-mail accounts of U.S. Yahoo e-mail account holders articles from British papers that contain embarrassing information on, among other things, the role of the U.S. in extraordinary rendition. For example, a friend sent me Stephen Grey’s excellent piece on extraordinary rendition, first published in “Le monde diplomatique” last Spring (2005), then available in English in November 2005. Yahoo marked Grey’s article “read, marked for deletion,” before I could even read the article. My friend sent me other things from the “Guardian” that I never received. Therefore, it would appear that Yahoo is acting as a censor right in its own backyard, i.e. on the U.S. web.
